Lake Tanganyika

The second-deepest, largest of the lakes of eastern Africa with the longest freshwater by volume, in the world after Siberia's Lake Baikal in Russia. Most Zambia visitors come to enjoy the country’s magnificent National Parks and Wilderness areas. The country’s many national parks teem with a wide variety of wildlife, wide diversity of bird life but also fishing has become an increasingly popular activity which attracts a wide number of foreign visitors due to the presence of the mighty Zambezi Rivers and Lakes, Bangweulu. Fly fishing for Zambezi Tiger-fish is a popular activity and Tiger-fish of 4-7kg are commonly caught. It is no wonder that the Lower Zambezi is regarded as a world classed tiger destination.

Still, many rivers and lakes in Zambia carry good stocks of fish, giving very reasonable sport. But the person, who is going to do fishing, must be prepared to travel long distances over rough roads, carrying his own camp equipment and finally making his camp beside the river he intends to fish since there are very few hotels off the main roads, and fewer still in fishing areas. Though the Tourist Board is conducting a successful drive for more hotels and rest houses, particularly the lodges in the national wildlife parks, where good fishing is done on the rivers.

All tourists visiting the Zambia water bodies for fishing should remember that the hippopotamus and crocodile are found in nearly all Zambian waters. Wading in rivers can be a dangerous pastime, and hippos, especially with calves, should be given a wide berth, an insecticide spray against tsetse fly and a malarial prophylactic are suggested.
