The second-deepest, largest of the lakes of eastern Africa with the longest freshwater by volume, in the world after Siberia's Lake Baikal in Russia. It lies in four countries' territories: a little in each of Burundi and Zambia, and more than 40 percent in each of Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.

The damming of the Zambezi River which was completed in the year 1961 led to the formation of the largest man-made world famed lake Kariba in Zambia. This was done due to the great need of massive hydroelectric power for the growing industries of Zimbabwe and Zambia. Two power stations, one on the Zambian bank and the other on the Zimbabwean side are in full operation. The lake has become a year-round source of water for an abundance of animals and bird life, and a sunny playground for both local and foreign tourists.
The lake can be reached by both air and Road. Access by air from Harare is on Air Zimbabwe or private charter and by road; Kariba is a 4/5 hour drive from Harare (Zimbabwean capital). Connecting to Victoria Falls is very possible using a ferry that is if you have your own vehicle .The ferry needs early booking at least a day before.
The road is safe and in reasonable repair .Besides, the back road via Binga/Magunge/Karoi is not recommended unless you’re fully equipped, and the trip via Bulawayo is tarred but boring.
